San Felice, Poggio Rosso Chianti Classico Riserva 2008

View reviews

This magnificent Chianti Classico Riserva tastes unbelievably fresh, given its 11 years' ageing. Infinitely layered with dark, ripe fruits, worn leather, pipe tobacco and truffle notes, this rich, complex wine will happily age for another 10 to 15 years.

About the Producer

In the heart of Italy's Chianti Classico region – the longest-established viticultural area in Tuscany – lies San Felice. Sitting atop the Castelnuovo Berardenga commune, a few kilometres from Siena, this stunning, sprawling property dates way back to Etruscan times. But it's the recent history of San Felice that's most key, especially its innovations and vineyard planting during the 1960s and '70s.

Taste

San Felice's meticulous vineyard management and grape selection have paid dividends, as can be clearly tasted in this 2008 Chianti Classico. It comes across more like a Super Tuscan than a decade-old Riserva, knocking you back with its intense fruit and complexity. Lavish plum, cherry, forest berry and kirsch flavours are carried on a seductively supple palate, while the richness of the fruit is interspersed with deeper notes of toasted spice, truffle, fresh tobacco and vanillary oak. The tannins are fine and seamless, while the finish is just dry enough to complement the food on your table, yet fresh with a tangy edge. Frankly, this is a beautiful wine.

Food & Wine

The perfect pairing here has to be Bistecca alla Florentine (aka Tuscan steak). Find a good butcher and get a well-aged, grass-fed T-bone. Marinade it with rosemary and olive oil and grill medium-rare, brushing with butter as you go. Slice some truffle over the top while the steak rests, then serve with potatoes and buttered green. Alternatively, roast haunch of venison would work beautifully too. Keep things simple but of the highest quality. You want to let this wine be the star of this show.
