Not sure about Amarone? Never tried one that justifies its reputation? Then allow us to introduce Viviani’s 2013 Amarone Classico. This is not your typical Amarone, and it’s all the better for it (for the record, we’re huge fans of this style, but it is a hit-and-miss wine). So while this wine is rich – as befits its appassimento production – it’s fresh and vibrant too, dense with flavours and very drinkable. An Amarone for a new generation of red wine lovers, one that will age for many years to come.

About the Producer

The Viviani family have ten hectares of vines in Mazzano in the historic Valpolicella Classico zone. Their vineyards lie on a south-southeast facing limestone slope at around 400 metres, soaking up the sun during the summer months. A confluence of warm breezes from Lake Garda and cold air from the Lessini mountains keeps the grapes healthy through their ripening and drying stages. Viviani are moving towards organic farming and focussing more and more on vineyard soil health.

The grapes for this wine are (75%), Rondinella (20%) and Molinara (5%), harvested from vines between 20 and 60 years of age. After harvest the fruit is left to partially dehydrate for around five months to concentrate its flavours. The grapes are then macerated in concrete vats and left to ferment spontaneously for around 40 days. After this, Viviani use their well stocked cellar to finish the wine in a mixture of Slavonian and French oak barrels between 350 and 2000 litres in size. The wine’s character is tweaked over the next two years before final blending and bottling.

As with any good Amarone, this wine takes some time to come alive. It’s always worth decanting an Amarone and getting some air into it, to release the flavours and wake it up. And once it’s awake, this wine just sings. Sweet maraschino cherry, poached strawberries and cassis mingle with deeper roasted nut, bitter chocolate, coffee bean and potpourri notes. The palate is gorgeously smooth and seductive, richly coating your mouth and teasing with its elegance. Overall, the harmony of this wine is second to none, from its lush bouquet to its long, lingering finish.

Food & Wine

The first thing that always crosses our mind with with a fine Amarone an equally fine piece of well-aged Parmesan, 36 months or older. The flavours and sensations mingle like no other, bringing out the best of both. Alternatively, oxtail and kidney pudding, alla Heston Blumenthal, would be a triumphant pairing, as would a slow-cooked shoulder of full-flavoured mutton. You want to match the rich texture of this wine while balancing its complex depths and slight sweetness.
