Dealu Mare is located within the Muntenia region of Romania which sits in the South of the country below Trannsylvannia. Muntenia sits between the Carpathian Mountains and the Danube River. It is one of the most important regions within the burgeoning Romanian wine industry. Evidence of wine production in the Region dates back to the fourteenth or fifteenth century, and there are some 15,000 acres of grapevines within the region. The soil, particularly in the west of the region has a high iron oxide content which lends to the character and quality of the red wines especially. However, the region also produces abundant and varied whites.
Jancis Robinson is a fan of the ‘superior’ red wines’ of the Dealu Mare region, and we think the wines offer great variety and value. Like much of Romanian wine, it’s well worth exploring.
