Merlot is the most popular red grape variety in the world despite the famous quote in the cult classic, Sideways, ‘If anyone orders Merlot I’m leaving!’ This dark blue grape is famous for the role it plays in the great blends of Bordeaux, adding body and softness to its sterner friends, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Full-bodied with fruit character of rich dark plums, Merlot is prominent on the right bank of the Garonne River in Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. In iron-clay rich soils Merlot unfolds an impressive tannin structure enabling wines to be aged for decades, as exemplified by the famed Petrus.
